What You Need to Know About Laser Skin Tightening

Laser Skin Tightening: A Non-Surgical Path to a Younger Look

If you’re like so many of us who have reached a certain age, you’re starting to notice little changes in your face that you don’t necessarily like. Fine wrinkles, thinning and loosening of the skin, and jowls where a jawline used to be can make you consider numerous cosmetic techniques, including surgery. However, you don’t need to schedule a full-scale facelift to enjoy tighter, younger-looking skin — not just on your face, but anywhere on your body. A state-of-the-art technology known as laser skin tightening can give you that new look in minimal time and with minimal discomfort.

Basic Principles of Laser Skin Tightening

To understand how laser skin tightening works, we must first understand why skin becomes “loose” in the first place. Human skin gets a lot of its plumpness, fullness, and smoothness from its stores of two connective tissues, collagen and elastin. Once you enter your 30s, your body stops making as much of these substances, robbing the skin of its support and elasticity.

Laser skin tightening aims to reverse this trend. The energizing power of a non-surgical amplified light beam penetrates the skin without damaging it. Beneath the skin surface, its energy triggers fresh production of collagen and elastin, essentially turning back the clock for your skin. This remarkable approach requires no injection of fillers, no external supports, and no cutting or shifting of tissues.

Three Laser Skin Tightening Techniques

Laser skin tightening includes three primary techniques, any of which can give you the results you seek. Let’s take a look at how each of these techniques does its job, what to expect from the procedure, and how many sessions each technique usually requires.

Radiofrequency (RF) Laser Skin Tightening

Radiofrequency (RF) laser skin tightening involves the application of a small probe to the skin. The probe delivers RF energy through the skin surface to its underlying dermis. It heats the tissues to achieve the necessary tightening effect, which might cause some minor, temporary discomfort. (You can always request a pre-procedure topical anesthetic if you like.) an RF session may take less than an hour, but you’ll need to schedule up to six sessions, usually at a rate of one per week, to get the maximum benefit. You may notice a little redness and swelling immediately after the procedure, but this fades quickly without any need for recuperation time.

RF Microneedling Laser Skin Tightening

This variation on radiofrequency laser skin tightening uses a microneedling tool rather than the usual RF probe to deliver its warming, tightening energy. The 37 tiny needles at the end of the tool are laid out in a square pattern. It acts something like a stamp — when the end of the tool is pressed against the skin, the needles make microscopic holes in the skin without actually wounding it. The RF energy then passes through these tiny needles directly into the layers beneath the skin surface. While you may still need up to six treatments, you can schedule these intensive RF sessions four to six weeks apart and still enjoy good results. The only disadvantage to this technique compared to the others is the need to take it somewhat easy for 24 hours afterward by avoiding makeup and exercise.

Ultrasound Laser Skin Tightening

Unlike the two techniques listed above, this technique relies on ultrasound to achieve its results. A handheld device applied to the skin sends ultrasound energy into the tissues. The ultrasound method can lift and tighten tissues at deeper levels than the RF methods, making it a smart choice for more extensive skin tightening needs. An ultrasound laser skin tightening treatment can take up to 90 minutes to complete. Its benefits start to become evident immediately, but the full effect can take up to three months to manifest itself. Consider it when you want to bring out the “big guns” for your long-term, deep-lifting strategy. As with RF treatments, your skin may feel quite hot during the procedure, but you won’t need to take any time off for recovery; you can get back to your everyday life right away.
